At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a young shepherd. His being was essentially untarnished, simple, and honest. His primary duty was essentially here to tend to his herd of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the wind across the solo tree on the mountaintop were his only companions. Day in day, looking out for his charges imbued in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.

But, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plot.

Narratives of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.

One day he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but discovered nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank continued for a few days more. But, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
